A Bikini? A Tankini? Or A Body Suit?

I have to make a choice.

It’s summer - finally.

Our vacation to the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs is fast approaching.

I don’t have a swim suit.  At least not one that fits.

I’m also as white as a ghost.  Glowing white.

A long time ago, I use to be a ‘sun goddess’ as they call them.  I had a love affair with the sun.  And baby oil.  Not that you would EVER find me purposely applying baby oil a.k.a. mineral oil to my skin these days since it’s pretty much toxic…but I digress.

The sun.  Baby oil.  A magazine.  Approximately 6-8 hours a day.  I was a ‘sun goddess’.

See what I mean.  This was June 15, 1992 – 18 years ago!  My friend and I were baking cookies for a bake sale we were doing for Poms.  A little tan, a little burnt. A  Tan-burn.Untitled-4

Soon after I got married, that all ended.  I can’t even tell you why.  The last time I wore a bikini was my honeymoonTen years ago!kari1 karibw

I even stopped wearing shorts.  Capri pants became my best friend.  Maybe it’s because you couldn’t buy stylish shorts that went past your butt and I wasn’t into walking around with daisy dukes that didn’t cover my bum. Yep.  Capri pants it was.

I had to start wearing swimsuits about 6 years ago when we started going to Glenwood Springs every summer.  Ugh.  I never liked how I looked in swim suits.  First and foremost, because I’m female, but mostly because I have an awkward shaped body.  High hips. Really high hips.  Chicken legs.  Padded mid-section.  Not too bad, but padding none the less.  After all I have given birth to two kids.  I have a not so abundant bosom (I blame the kids).  Like I said, ugh!

So, I was browsing the internet looking for swimsuits I could buy.  I’m not into the swim suits at Target and such, only because I’m not into the fabric of most of them, they fade easy and they stretch quickly.  Yes, I tend to stretch out the bottoms.  Anyhooodle…

Here’s what I found.

(all photos taken Hapari’s website, Nordstrom’s website and some other sites from forever ago that I don’t remember.  oops)

Wishing we could get away with more full coverage suits like the ones below these days.

Okay, a little, um, out there.  Maybe I could try the cape and cause a new fashion frenzy.  Right here in Colorado – imagine that!
Photobucket

Maybe this – a little more classy.  I like the heeled sandals.  I normally wear heels at the pool.  Seriously.
Photobucket

Shoot, this covers up all insecurities.
Photobucket

Updated version of the black classy one above.  Being strapless, I’d probably slouch.  Not attractive.
Photobucket

Thinking this would emphasize my funky hips too much!
Photobucket

Cute, but you really need a toned butt, not to mention thighs, to wear shorts like that.  Okay and a six pack.
Photobucket

I like how these things cover the bum!  You can have a little ‘junk in the trunk’ if you know what I mean – and still look good!  Not that this model does, but just in case you do…
Photobucket

They do say the color black slims you up a bit.  I hope it’s dark black, because I don’t think I’d have such smooth lines as her.
Photobucket

These are more my type – even though I still don’t like wearing bikini bottoms.
Photobucket
I like these colors and the flowers.  My chest is small enough (thanks to nursing for 29 months  [and counting] of my life) that I don’t have to worry about showing any cleavage.  I got NONE!
Photobucket
Not a huge fan of the colors – but I definitely like the skirt.  I can so do this.  It would hide pretty much everything! Photobucket

So, what style do you wear???

Let’s face it.  I’m a female that is a tad insecure about how she looks in anything other than her jeans and hoodie.  I’m working on being confident enough that it doesn’t matter WHAT I look like.  I won’t care what anyone thinks (well, except maybe hubby).  Until then – this is a big issue for me!

I’m going shopping this weekend to look for the perfect swimsuit – as if that really exists.  Hopefully I can find one at a store.  If not, I’ll be getting online and trying my hand at buying a swimsuit on the web.  How in the world would I even know what size to get?  I usually have to try on 15 sizes, at least twice, to make sure something like this fits me!  Here’s to happy shopping!

Happy Friday Bloggy Friends!  Have a great weekend! As always….

Girl you are too adorable. Pick a suit and wear that confidence. You'll rock any of them. (I personally dig the cape.)

I wear a tankini with shorts on. I personally like the bikini bottoms because it's so much easier to go potty but I put shorts on over them. So basically I'm wearing clothes. Hahaha. Shorts with a halter top. Classy I tell 'ya.

Used to wear bikinis, even with little thicker thighs. I would get the kind that had ties on the sides on the bottom because they sorta blocked my thighs. Since I have been pregnant the last couple of summers... its full string strapped tank and shorts. Nothing smaller than! Who knows what the future brings, all depends on how my body looks next year. One thing for sure, boy shorts suits r always exentuates the upper thighs and therefore I will never wear those!

I have a tankini from Land's End... have you looked at their website? They really have some great suits! I had a hard time deciding. They still have the frumpy suits for those who want them, but they offer plenty of really cute suits for a great price.

Good Luck!!

Hey, SPF 50 is sexy. Don't worry about being white. I slather on the sunscreen and generally by the end of the summer I'm brown anyway.

Go with whatever makes you feel good. I absolutely hate swimsuit shopping, but when you find a good one it's fabulous.

I love tankinis and I like the boyshorts too (around here, you can get a cute pair of board shorts to wear as a cover-up too).

I saw a girl post some retro-type swimsuits that were new for this season and she asked if anyone liked them. Honestly, they were hideous (really high-waist). If it makes the super skinny model look stupid... then, um, no it's definitely not going to look good on me. ;)

I hear ya on this topic! I hate swimsuit shopping, and my body was not made for a swimsuit either! I usually go with the tankini with bikini bottoms, because my thighs are way too big for the cute little shorts. I got one I really liked last summer, but now being pregnant, it doesn't look so cute. Here's to happy shopping!!

Oh goodness! I used to love wearing bikinis and back in the day-string bikinis... but not so much anymore. I also stopped wearing shorts. I really don't want people to see my woo haa hanging out! Sorry!!!

I am thinking of going with a tankini this year. I think you should too!

I can't tell you the last time this body was put in a bathing suit...

Girl, I bet you would look good in about anything.

You crack me up!!! I was laughing about not wearing shorts anymore and capris being your best friend. That is SO me! The daisy dukes look just isn't working for me.....oh, and the low rider, you can see your undies look. Not for me!

I don't get in a bathing suit unless I have to (like at my MIL's house in her pool with the girls), but I have a tankini and the bottom is a straight skirt and I really like it. It's stylish and I like the skirt because it's still short but covers up what you need it too. I like those tankini's you showed....mine's alot like the skirt one, only the skirt on mine doesn't have a ruffle.

I usually just keep on my coverup unless I absolutely have to take it off. Ha!

All I can ask is, why don't I look like those models?

i wish I could find the perfect suit too. I like black and I do like the tankini top with the boy shorts bottoms. Just my preference. alot of coverage yet still a swim suit.

what a post! :) you weren't kidding! lots of swimsuits. :) well, I actually went shopping for one today. NOT FUN AT ALL! trying to figure out if you like it in the terrible fitting rooms with those awful safety tab thingys on them... oh, yes, not fun! I tried Dicks because I had a coupon. Reebok has some nice tankinis that cover me up well. Then, I went to TJMaxx and found one that I like but not sure if I'm going to like once I'm at the beach. I'd be so much happier swimming in a tanktop and shorts! :) lol can't wait to see what you decide... and, my sister and I used to do the baby oil and iodine... :) we love the sun but we are getting smarter about it anyway...

Some of those pictures crack me up! I was just thinking this earlier today. I haven't bought a bathing suit since I've had my son, so I would like to say bikini, but that's all I'm used to wearing.

Tankini all they way. I save the bikini with the skirt for when I'm in a secluded area pool or with just the family. Otherwise, tankini with boy shorts.

I have to wear a tankini with a skirt. WAY too much junk in the trunk!!!

Just bought by first post baby suit yesterday. I have to say I went with a tankini.

You are to funny and I think we all can relate. My husband wants me to wear a bikini so I do for him. I prefer a tankini. I had to die at the capri pants statement. All the shorts went so short I was living in those things and this year Rob told me it was time to get rid of my short jeans (: He had seen them enough.

I think I have 4 bikinis and 1 one-piece that's from the summer that I was a lifeguard (I kept it b/c it's reversible-2 suits in 1!!)

Great looking tankini especially with the skirt.
