To the bakery cakes that KNOW I am smitten with them. Why did I have to encounter 3 of you this past week and why did I feel the need to partake of you in abundance? You KNOW I am smitten with you. Thank you very much!
To the dear, sweet friends who suggested sharing and giving the cake to family and friends so I didn’t have it sitting around my house, talking to me telling me to eat it. How does sharing my bakery cake benefit me? If you read the above, you KNOW I am smitten with bakery cakes. Thank you very much!
To the kindergarten teachers who made the longest supply list that a kindergartener has ever had. Thank you very much!
To those same teachers who want me to buy 8 boxes of 8 count ‘slim’ crayons. Do you realize that one box of 8 count crayons cost 80 cents. Do you also realize that a box of 24 count crayons costs 25 cents. Do you realize that I figured out that the one row of colors in the 8 count box is the same colors in the first row of the 24 count box. Can you guess what this mom did? Thank you very much!
To those same teachers who had on the list ‘One box small ziplock bags’ and ‘One box large ziplock bags’. Being a teacher you could be more specific since there are four sizes of ziplock bags: snack, sandwich, quart, gallon. Thank you very much!
And, again, to those same teachers who at the end of this ongoing supply list for my 5 year old had this comment: MORE SUPPLIES WILL BE REQUESTED IN THE FALL. I never realized I’d be spending over $60 on school supplies, for my daughter to go to kindergarten, before school started to only have the joy of knowing I’ll be buying even more once school has started. Thank you very much!
One year down, 12 to go!
p.s. Having many friends who are teachers, I completely understand the cost that teachers incur over a school year, coming out of their own pockets. Hubby and I are perfectly secure ,financially, to afford these supplies. However I do know some family and single parent families where spending all this on school supplies could be a stretch. I remember when we had scissors, crayons, glue and a backpack. AND we got to keep these supplies with us and if we ran out we had to have mom and dad buy more. Now, they put all the supplies in a ‘community’ bin where they are all shared (then thrown out at the end of the year).
p.s.s. Do you realize that most schools (at least here in Colorado) actually THROW AWAY all remaining school supplies at the end of each year????? What a waste. A couple years ago, I sent letters to around 30 elementary schools here in my area and challenged them to donate their school supplies to my non-profit organization, Joy.Love Outreach – and I in return would send those supplies to schools in Haiti. Only ONE school took that challenged (Thank you Wilder Elementary School in Littleton) and I was APPALLED (and that’s an understatement) to see what would have been thrown out. Supplies that had never been open or used: pencils, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, glue bottles, composition and spiral notebooks, kleenex, etc, etc, etc. Why aren’t they keeping these for the following year to have ‘extra’? Why aren’t they themselves taking those supplies to inner city schools in our area to help them out? Nope, they just toss them in the trash. What a waste for those parents who spent close to or over $100 on supplies at the beginning of the year, not to mention what they spend throughout the year! You can guess that this year I will be all over my daughter’s elementary school to donate their supplies and I’ll take them to inner city schools in Denver! This is one pro-active parent that might not be too welcomed in the school community! Don’t even get me started on the food they serve in schools!!! BRING.IT.ON!
We’re constantly being bombarded with: save electricity, save water, save gas!!!!! But when it comes to stuff like this, we have no issue with waste! Okay, off my soapbox!
Happy Thursday!

I so thought you made that cake! It looks SOOOOOOO good.
I've seen the school supply lists... they're crazy! Hand sanitizer, paper towels, zip lock bags, and then all the 'regular' school supplies on top of that. I don't know how I feel about it being community property. I mean, not that it matters 'cause my kids don't go to public school, but when I was a kid, those were MY supplies. And, seriously, they THROW that stuff AWAY at the end of the year??? I respect teachers and the job they do very much, but that's ridiculous. It also kills me to see what portion of my property taxes go to the schools each year and then to see the growing list of supplies they ask for... and to find out it's thrown in the garbage, even unopened stuff???!!! GAH!
Oh, and I was FIRST. Booyah.
We are encountering our 3 lists this year. Big fun. I am totally waiting for the big sales.
I didn't know that they threw the supplies away. Not cool at all.
Those cakes do look good too. YUM
I had no idea they were throwing away supplies. Ouch! That's not okay. That, to me, is them saying they don't appreciate the help from parents so let it come out of their own pockets. See how it feels when they throw supplies away that they had to pay for.
Oh bring it on lady! Those lists pest me too! Go get 'em!
Wowww, I can't believe it's time to get her registered for Kindergarten!
this post made me thankful to be a homeschooling mommy!!! lol loved your post! :)
That is nuts about all that stuff being thrown away! Totally not cool!
Those cakes looked so yummy. I esp love the one with the flip flops!
I'm still waiting to get our list. Wonder what ours will say? :)
I feel bad for the teachers but I also feel bad for my children. I however don't want to homeschool so I volunteer a lot and provide supplies when I can. I wish the government would quit bailing out the big company execs and spend that money on our children and their futures!
That was an enlightening post :)
Loved those yummy cakes, I so want them right away :D
Wow! I can't believe you have to buy 8 boxes of 8 count crayons! That is CRAZY! I'm a Kindergarten teacher in a small school in Arkansas and our supply list has to be under $20 and we never ask for additional supplies. And I definitely keep all my extras for the next year! I'm so glad you are working to get those schools to donate their extra supplies rather than throw them out! More power to ya!!!
Girl, don't even get me started on those school supply lists! It's like you need a secret decoder to read their minds on what they're asking for, and no stores in town ever have what they ask you to get! LOL!! For some reason though, I LOVE shopping for those supplies. It gives me some sort of weird satisfaction to cross things off that list. Ha!
I don't know what our school does with the leftovers. Usually, their boxes and crayons/scissors/pencils get sent back home. Our school does collect and donate supplies for those who can't afford them, so I assume they keep them for that....I hope!
You have got to be kidding! They throw the stuff away? How can do that? I am sooooo mad now and just waiting to ask what they do with leftover supplies at our school!
Wow, you're making me dread the elementary years already!
Ok...I am a teacher and I so do not throw supplies away at the end of the year. I barely have anything left at the end of the year.
There supplies they bring...crayons, scissors, glue, colored pencils are all theirs for the entire year and they can take them home in the summer if they still have them.
The ziplock bags...I hate asking for them, but do you know how many teeth fall out in the year and without a baggie they get lost and then I can't teach math because we are all on the floor looking for someone's tooth.
It is a vicious cycle...but if you need a poor teacher who could use any kind of supplies to carry over to the next year--you can send them my way!!!!
:)
