Addicted To Hormones Part DEUX

So, I’m going to continue this health study on hormones and the overall effect they have on our bodies.  As in, they are what makes our body function so we better learn how to keep them healthy and in balance if we want to live a healthy, long and productive life!

There is something about us humans that don’t want to change anything until we are faced with uncertainty – cancer, disease, deterioration of the body, etc.  I choose to PREPARE so down the road I don’t have to REPAIR

(this is a longer post, so read it in intervals if you need to – don’t skip over it because of it’s length…the information is very valuable to everyone!)

Before any of you leave this post, I encourage you to read a little further.  If you are someone who finds themselves thinking or saying (or you know someone who does) things like:

~Why am I always sleepy no matter how much sleep I get?

~How come I have no energy and it only seems to be getting worse?

~I’m only 30 why do I have all these wrinkles on my face and why is my skin already sagging?

~How come I can’t ever lose any weight?

~How come I can’t lose that last 10 pounds?

~Why is my skin so dry?

~Why am I still getting acne and I’m way past my teenage years?

~Why are my PMS symptoms so terrible?

~Why am I having such a hard time conceiving?

~Why am I always moody?

~How can I have diabetes and I’m only in my early twenties?

~Why do I crave sugar?  Why do I crave salty things?

~How come I’m having such a hard time sleeping?

~Why do I keep getting gout?

~ Why is my young daughter’s body developing at such a young age?

~ETC. ETC. ETC.

If that’s you or someone you know – stick with me on these health posts and I promise you that you will find help with the information I am giving you.  These particular posts may be long – but they will be worth the timeYour health is worth it!  I’m breaking them up into several posts, because there is a lot of foundational info I need to give you!

The fascinating thing about hormonal imbalances is that they can be ‘fixed’ or ‘balanced’ or “brought back into harmony” by simply CHANGING WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK

Isn’t that amazing?  You don’t need all these pills you see on TV, you don’t need counseling – you just need to get your body working and functioning properly and at it’s peak.  There is now a pill for everything.  One commercial states that if you have more than 2 negative thoughts a day or week you could be clinically depressed.  Come on people!  Let’s take charge of our lives!

Pills are a band-aid.  They don’t go to the root of any problem.  If anything, they just force numbers down, but once you get off those pills, the numbers go right back up.  And on top of it, all those pills add extra issues to your physical body and emotional life.  I know people who have resorted to taking pills, but my desire is to see them come off those pills as they learn how to change what they are putting into their body, causing their body to get back in balance where they don’t need the pills anymore.

That, my friend, is freedom.  To not be bound by pills, counselors, co-pays or doctors.  To not believe that there is no solution for them, that there is no hope of a better life!  There is!

So – today I’m going to list off some of the main hormones in our body and what part of our body and lives they affect!  Read the info below and see if you can relate to any of these symptoms.

I know for a fact that my thyroid hormone is low.  With both pregnancies they did blood tests and my T4 is low aka a sluggish thyroid.  This can lead to many things including weight gain, not being able to lose weight and temperature sensitivity – and you all know that I’m cold when the thermometer hits 70 degrees or lower – Fahrenheit!  I was excited to learn that I didn’t have to go on a prescription to get this taken care of – I will do it naturally and get my body working right again.

Here we go!

__________________________________________

the TOP 11 HORMONES I’LL DISCUSS

INSULIN

THRYOID

ESTROGEN / PROGESTERONE

TESTOSTERONE

DHEA

CORTISOL

HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE (HGH)

LEPTIN

GLUCAGON

MELATONIN

In this post I’ll list what they are and in my next post I’ll talk about what causes these imbalances and I’ll tell you how you can get them back in balance with your diet.

__________________________________________

INSULIN affects Food Metabolism….Insulin pretty much governs your body and has a huge part in the effects of aging.  When we consume excess sugar, we produce and have excess insulin.  Low fat diets and excess ‘bad’ carbs will cause the pancreas to overproduce insulin.  When your pancreas gets too overwhelmed, it will stop making insulin – which results in elevated blood sugar levels and leads to diabetes.  If you have a ‘middle section’ it’s a good indication that your body is secreting too much insulin.

Symptoms connected with too much insulin include abdominal obesity, depression, facial hair on women, high liver enzymes, acne, problems sleeping, infertility, high blood pressure, skin tags, gout, irregular menstrual cycles and more.

Symptoms connected with too little insulin include rapid breathing, stomach pain, fatigue, unusual thirst, blurred vision, increased pulse rate, infection and more.

THRYOID affects Energy and Metabolism….The Thyroid is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body and is found in the neck below the ‘adam’s apple’.  The Thyroid provides energy, boosts your immune system against infections and cancer, lowers blood pressure, decreases ‘bad’ cholesterol and can help improve your thinking.  It helps control the rate at which your body burns calories,  affects fertility, digestion, mood, overall growth, your heart rate and more.

There are two issues with an unbalanced Thyroid:  Hyperthyroidism (overactive) and Hypothyroidism (underactive).

Hypothyroidism (an autoimmune disease) is when your thyroid gland does not make enough of the hormone.  Those affected by this can experience low body temperature, depression, realllllyyyy slllooowwww metabolism, fatigue, dry skin and hair, slow heartbeat, hair loss, weight gain, memory issues, menstrual problems (heavy and prolonged), carpal tunnel syndrome, exhaustion, lump on neck (goiter), snoring, puffy face, dry or yellowing skin, difficulty swallowing, droopy eyelids and more.

Overproduction of the Thyroid hormone can result in: dizziness, extreme hunger, low blood pressure, bulgy ‘bug’ eyes, weight loss, excessive body heat, fatigue, insomnia, light or skipped periods, heat intolerance and more.

ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE serve many functions in both males and females.  In women it is a part of our entire development from childhood to adulthood. It also has a part in bone density, memory, blood fats, digestive enzymes, lowers body fat, protects the heart and against Alzheimer’s disease, improves overall glucose tolerance, enlarges breasts and widens the pelvis (gives females their curves), increases insulin sensitivity and more.

Signs of low estrogen are headaches, frequent bladder infections, weight gain, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mental ‘fuzziness’ and more.

Signs of high estrogen levels include headaches, depression, bloating, swelling of the breasts and excessive vaginal bleeding.

Low progesterone levels can cause irregular and heavy periods, anxiety, migraines, pms symptoms and more.

TESTOSTERONE has several function as well, in both males and females.  This hormone aids libido in both male and females.  In males it’s needed to maintain muscle mass and strength, normal hair growth, bone mass, sperm production, weight maintenance and more.

With a lower testosterone level it will be harder to build muscle, but much easier to gain fat.  Low levels can also cause decreased fertility.

DHEA  is a steroid hormone found in the adrenal glands as well as the brain and is one of the most abundant in our body.  (Note: steroid means: that your body creates this hormone out of cholesterol.)

Symptoms of a DHEA deficiency can include depression, anxiety and fatigue.

CORTISOL is a stress hormone and has several functions including energy and inflammation control.  Cortisol is a major hormone responsible for increasing blood sugar levels, and in turn, energy levels, it also neutralizes inflammation and it raises blood pressure.  It’s a long explanation to fill you in today on Cortisol release, but just know right now it’s connected to many other hormones and their functions.  Too high or too low levels of Cortisol is a big deal.

Some symptoms of too little Cortisol include low blood pressure, salt cravings, paleness, extreme weakness, nausea and vomiting, chronic diarrhea, lesions inside the mouth and more.

Some symptoms of too much Cortisol include weight gain, obesity, depression, diabetes, high blood sugar, frequent colds or infections, insomnia, irregular periods, high blood pressure, belly fat and more.

HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE (HGH) is an amazing hormone all around involved in our overall growth and repair of tissues.  It also protects your bones, builds muscle, burns fat, helps resist heart disease and is known as the closest thing to the ‘fountain of youth’.   It also helps reduce anxiety and can help deepen your sleep and prevents many aging signs on your face such as deep skin creases, a shrinking jawline and a dwindling upper lip.   HGH helps keep us fit and helps put the brakes on insulin – which is a fat-storing hormone.  If we have too much, we’d be too tall, if we have too little, we’d be dwarfs.  We need this hormone and we need it functioning at it’s peak.

Signs of too little HGH include sleep problems, wrinkles, shortness, low energy levels, fatty deposits in the face and belly, decreased bone density, depression, moody, decreased muscle mass and more.

Signs of too much HGH include hardening of the arteries, thickening of bones in your jaw, toes and fingers, breasts in males (aka man boobs), diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, insulin resistance and more.

LEPTIN is our satiety hormone-which means it tells your body when it’s full or when it’s hungry.  Leptin is most active in your brain and it also manages how much fat is stored around the organs and under your skin.  Research shows that overweight people have too much leptin in their system.  The more ‘fat’ in your body, the more your body produces Leptin.  A vicious cycle.

If Leptin levels are low, you most likely are malnourished and have a very low body fat.  Some research shows high Leptin levels are linked to high sugar and high insulin levels.  High levels of Leptin show to be associated with obesity, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease, high cholesterol, increased inflammation, constant hunger, diabetes, elevated thyroid hormones and more.

GLUCAGON affects your food metabolism and has the opposite function of insulin in that in melts fat.  If there is an absence of sugar in your system, glucagon is released and pulls sugars out of storage (since your tissues need sugar and energy) and it pulls them out of the liver and from fatty tissues to raise your blood glucose level.  When your body has too little glucagon, you will gain weight and become fat.  It’s when glucagon metabolized your fat into energy that you will lose weight.

As long as you continue to eat throughout the day, never giving your body a break – you will never lose weight.  Why?  Because when you eat, insulin is released and insulin and glucagon cannot be in the bloodstream at the same time because they have opposing functions.  If you are constantly eating, there will constantly be insulin in your bloodstream.  If you give yourself a break, insulin will leave and glucagon can be released and do it’s job of melting fat!

MELATONIN is a major sleep hormone and has a lot to do with our long term health and is controlled by light, heat and food.  You could call it the ‘hibernation’ hormone.  Melatonin improves your sleep, can lessen feelings of anxiety and can also reduce signs of aging in the face, makes you sleepy and cools your body.  If your levels of Melatonin are low, you will have sleep problems.  Your sleep is light and if you wake up – you have a hard time falling back asleep.

Melatonin also is connection with many other areas including supporting your immune system, lowers cortisol levels, is an antioxidant and increases the levels of your sex hormones as well as your growth hormone (HGH).

Some symptoms of too much Melatonin include insomnia, palpitations and vivid and/or unpleasant dreams.

Some symptoms of too little Melatonin include premature aging, problems falling asleep, depression, feeling unrested in the morning, overactive mind while falling asleep, waking up suddenly in the night – and then not being able to fall back asleep easily, anxiety and memory loss.

__________________________________________

So, there is the list of the hormones I will be discussing.  As you can probably see – you have many of these symptoms yourself.  I will go over how our hormones become unbalanced and what you can do naturally, through food, to bring them back into balance!

If anybody has certain issue they find themselves dealing with – let me know and I can see if I can address those in these posts!

I haven’t baked in over a month and for me, that is just wrongJ’adore baking.  Truly.  So, today being a rainy/snowy/windy day in Colorado, I decided to bake some cookies with Bella!

This recipe is from my mother in law and is delicious!  Enjoy!

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 - 12 oz package semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
(I prefer dark, bittersweet chocolate with at least 62% cocoa)
  • additional sugar

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Beat until smooth.  Combine flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt; add to butter mixture.

Beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla and chocolate chips.  Shape mixture into 1" balls - roll in sugar.  Place 2" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Um, You Missed Your Lips

“Um, You Missed Your Lips”

DSC05674 DSC05673

This was taken in January 2009.

My sister gave me some Mary Kay lipstick samples and Bella asked if she could put some lipstick on – so I said sure.  I was out in the kitchen while she did it – and this is how it ended up.  Hmmmm….  She got it everywhere BUT her lips :o)

Happy Wednesday!

“Did The Piggy Dial 911?”

It’s been a while since I participated in a True Story Tuesday post, so I thought I’d join in today!

true story tuesday final_thumb

My mom.

You all know her and her crazy ways and this story popped into my head yesterday that I had completely forgot about.  I just knew I couldn’t be done making fun of her in the bloggy world!

Go back with me about 12 –14 years ago.

There was this news story that came out about a pot-bellied pig that dialed 911 and saved it’s owner’s life.  I can’t remember if it was local, but I do remember it was big news.

Missy, our pot-bellied pig, was about 3 or 4 years old – so obviously we thought this news story was AMAZINGLY COOL since we knew how smart pigs are.  The fact that I talk to animals is no secret to my blog followers.  Well, my whole family talks to animals.  We have conversations back and forth with them.  It’s quite amusing.

Anyhoodle….after that news story we would always ask Missy if she was going to call 911 – in our normal ‘baby talk’ we use with our animals.

piggy

So, one night my mom was in her room and Missy was roaming around in there and she was nudging around on stuff – and she nudged the phone and knocked it over.  Now, this was a land line – land line.  Cord attached to hand receiver – that kind of land line.  Old school all the way.  So, Missy knocks the phone over and is grunting into the phone, so of course my mom gets down on the floor and gets near Missy’s face and starts saying in that cute baby talk:

“Did Missy dial 911?  Did da Piggy dial 911?  Huh?  Did da Piggy dial 911?  She’s so smart!  Yes she is.  She’s a smart piggy.  She’s so….”

Huh?  What was that noise?

Seemingly out of nowhere, we hear my dad’s voice.  As if it’s coming from the heaven’s or something.  But, wait, it appears to be coming from the phone.

Yes.  My dad’s voice WAS coming from the phone.  Why?  Because he was on the phone with a business client, conducting business until they were interrupted by a pig oinking into the receiver and a lady talking like a baby saying:

“Did Missy dial 911?  Did da Piggy dial 911?  Huh?  Did da Piggy dial 911?  She’s so smart!  Yes she is.  She’s a smart piggy.”

“Oink, oink.  Grunt, grunt.”

Yuppers, Real professional.

Way to go Mom!

A day wouldn’t be normal in our family without something like this happening.  If it weren’t for my mom, we’d all live boring lives.  Kinda.

Here we are again, another week has gone by!  Amazing to think that it’s almost May which means I’m almost 35!  Hmmmm….

If you missed my ‘Addicted to Hormones’ post from Friday, you should check it out.  I started giving some good info on how our entire physical health is affected by the balance or unbalance of hormones in our body!  This will sort of be a new ‘series’ I’ll be doing on my blog!

And tomorrow is the day I am doing that panel with some other local bloggers!  I’m very excited to meet with these companies!  I’ll fill you in on that later this week.

Now, onto the photos.  A couple of the days I posted a two photos from that particular.  Hard to choose this time around.

Addicted To Hormones – Part 1

female-bodybuilder (photo courtesy of Google Images, not Kari’s photo album)

Okay, so maybe not like a she-man or a female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Although the fact that he has bigger, um, boobs, then me is upsetting – I guess since he never had kids permanently attached to his breasts  for 28 months sucking everything out of you like I have…But, I digress.

Hormones.

g2241hormones

I’m addicted to these little suckers in a good way.  I’ve been learning about hormones semi-extensively for the past 3 1/2 months and I’ve been sucked into the topic.

I’m trying to figure out how I can make this short enough where people will want to read it, so I think I’ll start with some basics today, then I can get into more detail.  Without a foundation – the other info won’t make much sense.

hormone_diag2(huh?)

First.  When you think of metabolism, you most likely think of people who can lose weight easily or gain weight easily.  How many can agree that most of us are in the latter category – and all that weight gain gets blamed on our ‘slow metabolism’?

Well, that’s half true.  The whole weight thing is an ‘expression’ of what our metabolism does.  A definition of metabolism from Jillian Michaels is:

“Metabolism is like a chemistry lab.  It is the combo of all the molecules, hormones, and brain-, gut-, and fat-cell messenger chemicals that regulate the rate you burn calories.”

In short:  HORMONES CONTROL YOUR METABOLISM

Some other definitions were way too long and confusing, so I liked this the best.

I also liked that she mentioned:

“Our metabolism is dynamic, not static, and it can be changed!”

This means that everything we put into our bodies (through food, drink and air) will affect how are bodies function.  I always knew food was important and that we needed to be eating ‘living foods’, but I didn’t know the explicit details as to WHY

Now I know.

I also have learned and continue to learn that WE are able to change these unbalances naturally, without forcing our bodies to change through synthetic drugs.

One phrase we should get into our thinking is:

MY HEALTH IS PRICELESS

And – it is.  My thought is that if you take the time to PREPARE by being proactive with your health now, then you won’t have to REPAIR later down the road.  Food is medicine and the majority of us are being poisoned by our ‘diets’.

A few thoughts:

- Your body cannot function properly when one or more hormones are out of whack and unbalanced.

- Your hormones regulate various functions in your body (think weight, sleeping patterns, food metabolism, cell repair, etc .

- Your hormones are affected by what you eat, drink, put on your body, breathe in the air, our lifestyle, our activity level and stress.

- When one hormone gets unbalanced, the other hormones get ‘confused’ and try to solve the unbalance and end up causing more bad then good.

- Weight gain is not just about calories.

- You can begin to balance out your hormones simply by changing your eating habits, exercise and being more conscious of what is going INTO your body.

- The onslaught of the majority of the health problems we see today began in the mid 1900’s when the United States became industrialized and processed food made it’s way into our stores and homes.

- Our bodies don’t recognize processed food and chemicals, so when we eat them, it wreaks havoc on our hormones.

- The AMA and WHO have released studies and guidelines that are actually causing more sickness than better health

- The food pyramid provided by our government changes every couple of years.  This ought to tell you that they don’t have the right answers if they keep having to change it.

hormonal-symptoms1

OKAY, OKAY, this is getting to be lots of info, so I’ll end PART 1 right here.  In future posts I’ll go into information about:

-  the different foods that affect different hormones

menu plans that you can use to eat ‘healthy’ but still be eating real food

-  how we have been misled on the good and bad fats and cholesterol sources and how their ‘substitutes’ are actually bad for your overall health

-  how by changing your diet and balancing out hormones, you can see changes in your body in the areas of: depression, moodiness, weight gain, headaches, fragile hair and nails, sagging skin, sleeplessness or extreme fatigue, energy levels, sugar cravings and so much more

- how we can protect our children from early-puberty due to all the hormones found in our foods, skin care products, plastics and packaging, drinking water and the air we breath

I promise you, if your health and overall quality of LIFE is important to you and you want to see positive changes in your physical body where you feel as if you’ve turned 180 degrees in the area of good health – then stick with me for the rest of these posts on hormones.  I think it could change your life, because it is already changing mine!

Come Back Later Today

Hey my wonderful bloggy friends

I’ve promised a hormone post for today and you will get it, but it’s going to be posted later in the day than I normally post.

Yesterday and today I’m giving a little TLC to my puppy, Jerry Bean.  It appears he got hit in his left eye by something and his eye was filling up with blood, so were were at the vet yesterday and after all my running around today, I’m taking him back in.  But no worries, he is doing good!  He’s a strong little guy!

Hence – I haven’t finished the hormone post.

But I should have it up early evening – which is like bedtime for some of you die hards (Brandi).

The rain has been pouring non stop for hours now.  Kind of cool.  Kind of wish I could curl up on the couch and watch a movie and drink hot cocoa.  Oh wait, I can’t do that. I have kids.  Haha!

See you later tonight!

And now that I think of it, this post is unnecessary since I’m quite positive that most of you WEREN’T waiting on pins and needles to read about HORMONES.

Well, except for Kristin!  Woohoo for her excitement over this :o)

ps…I lost a follower yesterday.  I wonder if my Earth Day post offended them???

An Award. My Handwriting. The Earth.

Hey y’all!  {for Kimber} I hope your Thursday is going good.  We are in the middle of a downpour right now.  The kids are enjoying watching it.  I’m just thinking that in about an hour, we have to go out in it.  It’s always fun running through the rain holding a kid in my arms, and herding the other kid and the pup to our destination.  No free arms to hold an umbrella.  Fun.

So, I have a couple things today.  I was planning on today’s post being all about hormones – because as of late I’m completely mesmerized by them – but I’ve decided to save that for tomorrow.  I can tell all of you are already waiting in anticipation for that.  Seriously, though.  Our entire body functions because of hormones, and when those little suckers are out of balance, which 99.9% of people’s are – then we have a myriad of problems:  weight gain, headaches, diabetes, PMS, infertility, insomnia, joint stiffness, pain, nausea, heart disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, obesity, stunted growth and the list goes on and on.  I am completely enthralled with it all.

So, I’m going to start doing some posts on these.  Julie, I have found and keep finding more info about a sluggish Thyroid.  Very interesting stuff.  Anyhoodle….that’s tomorrow.

Today.

You get to see my handwriting.  I know – this is monumental and you are overly-joyed at this.  I was tagged by Nicolasa at Keepin’ It In Perspective to do this.  So, here were the rules:

Now, my award.

beautiful blogger

Tree at Mother of Pearl It Is gave me this cool award, so I’m passing it along.

The rules state that I have to share 5 things about me & then pass this on to 5 Beautiful Bloggers. So here goes.....

1) My almost 5 year old daughter still has a monitor in her room.

2) I talk to animals.  Most of the time the animals talk back to me.  I usually have ongoing conversations with them.

3) I can’t go to bed without washing my face.  Ever.

4) I have water with me wherever I go.  I’ve done this for about 7 years.

5) I can probably count on two hands how many times I HAVEN’T made my bed in the almost 10 years I’ve been married.  It has to be made everyday and there is an art to it.  Pillow patterns facing a certain way, the throw blanket in a certain spot.  A tad OCD, I know.

I’m passing this along to:

Now, onto the earth.

Okay, so we all know today is Earth Day.  I’m not a big ‘celebrator’ of this day, not that I don’t like our Earth, but I just don’t get involved in the hype of celebrating Mother Earth.  In fact, I don’t refer to Earth as Mother Earth.

Some people, when they first meet me and learn about me, they think I’m a ‘crunchy mama’.  You know, native of Colorado, like to recycle, I have a compost bin in my back yard, I’m into organic foods, natural and organic skin care, alternative forms of medicine, being outdoors, love animals, etc, etc, etc.

But, it’s not because I’m a tree hugger, not that I mean to offend anyone with that statement.  I live amongst many of those – many are my friends.  BUT – in short, I prefer to highly esteem the Creator, not the creation.

I could write a whole other post on this, but I’m sure many have already stopped reading.  But, I did read a great post the other day at Tally’s Place about The Origins of Earth Day.  It was very interesting.

Well, off to get my hair cut!  I’m a little shaggy right now :o)

“IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.”

Columbine: Eleven Years Later and Memorial Photos

When this time of year rolls around, I always find myself thinking ‘I can’t believe it’s been so long since it happened.’

But it has.  This year will mark the 11th anniversary of the infamous Columbine High School shootings – but it seems like just a year ago this happened in our community.

You can read my post about COLUMBINE – that I wrote this time last year.  Sort of an ‘insiders’ point of view.  Not that I was a major insider, but living in Littleton  just a few blocks from the school and knowing students involved and affected by this tragedy – is just different than watching a segment with Katie Couric.  It all of a sudden becomes personal.

I wanted to post photos of all the make shift memorials that were made at Clement Park and Columbine High School in the weeks following the shootings.

The photos don’t do it justice.  You cannot experience the magnitude of what this area of our city looked like.  Memorials stretched across the park, piled all over the tennis courts at the school, covering the parking lots, the hundreds and hundreds of people that were there daily.  Yep.  You don’t see that in the photos. But you will get a glimpse of what it looked like.

These were taken with a point and shoot 35mm then scanned, so I apologize if they aren’t the best quality.

There were several ‘wreaths’ throughout the park and parking lot.  People would just add their stuff to these memorials.  Cards, flowers, photo collages, stuffed animals, personal notes and letters.  It was amazing.Photobucket

This part stretches across the whole photo, but since it’s far away, it’s hard to see.  A few days after all this happened it started raining and some local business came and put up these tents to cover the memorials.Photobucket

There were two sets of large crosses at the park – this is one of them.  They had the names of the victims on them and people laid gifts at the base.Photobucket

This is the second set.  They lined one of the major streets in Littleton.  I drove by this daily as part of my normal routine since I lived in the area and it was always breathtaking to see all these crosses lined up with lines and lines of people walking by and looking at them.Photobucket

This is another view of the above photo.Photobucket

This cross has Matthew Kechter’s name on it. Matt was my cousin’s best friend and my cousin was in the library with Matt when the shootings occurred.  When a teacher ran in the library and yelled for all the students to get under the tables because someone had a gun, Matt got under the table and my cousin jumped over the check out counter and hid in the closet – and later escaped with some other kids and ran home.  He waited all day to get a phone call from Matt that day.  Sadly, he never got that call.  (I talk more about this in my COLUMBINE post.)Photobucket

This was a section under a tent that had smaller crosses.  Matt’s is in the center.Photobucket

The gifts overflowed.Photobucket

This is Rachel Scott's car.  She lived two houses down from us at the time of the shootings.Photobucket

After all the memorials came down, the cars they had turned into memorials stayed a little bit longer.  This is when this photo was taken.  When her mom and step dad brought her car home, they didn’t wash anything off the car and it sat in front of their house like that for the longest time.  We lived in a cul-de-sac, so I saw the car every time I left and came back.  It was always very sad to see it sitting there post-memorial.  It felt empty.Photobucket

This is John Tomlin’s truck.  If you look to the right, you’ll notice they even brought in bathrooms since there were so many people coming through this park on a daily basis.  They even added a permanent cross walk from the park into the neighborhood across the street from all the foot traffic of people parking there and walking over to the park.Photobucket

When you looked inside his truck, you saw his Bible laying on top of the dashboard.  His family and friends said he always carried it in his truck.Photobucket

This is my cousin, Ryan, who was attending Columbine at the time and who was in the library with Matt Kechter on the day of the shootings.  This photo was taken in July or August of 1999.  I love the look on Jerry’s face!!!  Jerry was only 1 year old at the time.Photobucket

These photos were taken in June 1999.  This is my mom and Craig Scott, Rachel Scott’s brother.  He came up one night and we ordered pizza and played board games.  We laughed most the night and just had a great time.  No matter how he was portrayed on Dateline or any other magazine TV show – Craig was a wonderful kid.  He just went through a hard time with the death of his sister and being in the library, himself, witnessing some of the murders.  That’s a lot for someone to go through.

This is Craig and my bro.ski playing Scattegories.  My mom and I saw Craig and his mom a couple years ago.  There was that excitement you get when you see people you haven’t seen in a while.  It was fun to see him ‘all grown up’!Photobucket

So, there you have it.  I wish I would have taken more photos of the memorial, but there was so much – to the point of being overwhelming.  I also remember when we were walking around that I cried a lot and would just stand in silence and look at all these acts of love and compassion towards the victims.  I couldn’t even talk – and I’m a talker.  It was very humbling in a sense.

I will never forget that day and the weeks that followed.  The emotions were so strong that going through these and reading my COLUMBINE post – I can actually physically feel those emotions again.

I am hoping that today will be an easy day for the families as they acknowledge the 11 year anniversary of the Columbine Tragedy.  My heart still goes out to those families and students who lived through this. Their lives will never be the same.  May the lives of the victims- the children, father, friend, student, teacher – may their lives always be remembered, honored and cherished

Thanks for stopping in today!
